How to dress for your shape in this season's dresses

With so many different trends to choose from this season, you’ll have no problem dressing for your shape and dressing on-trend. Your sartorial options are almost endless, with various eras and countries covered, from 1960s-esque mod styling, to feminine 1940s chic via English country manors and traditional Navajo Indian wools. We’ve found dress styles to suit your shape and offer some tips on how to style them. For more inspiration, check out the vast collection of dresses from House of Fraser, all available online.

Hourglass: figure-hugging Aztec knitted bodycon dress

Bohemian styling is back, but unlike boho trends of the past, this time there is a nod to traditional materials and patterns of the Americas. Jagged, asymmetric patterns will work with the curves of every hourglass women and tactile wool is perfect for hugging your enviable frame. Colours are warm and simple, sticking generally to a primary colour palette of red, yellow and blue with the odd foray into orange and brown.

Fringing is a key part of this trend as is layering. Look for a close-fitting woollen bodycon dress to flatter your curves and emphasise your waist. This trend is casual, so layer up with a denim shirt, a thick woollen scarf and a cape or poncho. Add thick wool tights and some flat shearling cuff ankle boots and plenty of traditional styled jewellery like beaded and leather necklaces and bracelets.

Apple: 1960s-style loose fitting shift dress

Drop waisted, loose fitting shift dresses are perfect for apple shapes. They will skim over your stomach, and the short hemline will focus on your great, slim legs. The rounded or Peter Pan collar neckline will slim your shoulders and help to emphasise your bust. If you’re not a fan of your arms, team the dress with a collared shirt underneath, preferably in a contrasting colour and/or pattern.

The best colours to go for are red, mustard yellow, green and orange. Keep accessories to a minimum. Add a simple pair of courts, a contrasting colour pea coat and a leather satchel.

Pear: 1940’s style tea-dress

A feminine era and one when dresses were meant to flatter a woman’s shape. The tea dress makes the perfect choice for pear shapes. The nipped in waist, belted with a skinny belt, shows off your tiny middle, whilst the v-neckline gives your bust some oomph. Keep the length to around the knee for the most flattering silhouette.

Polka dots and floral patterns particularly in muted tones of browns, pinks, mauves and beiges are spot on. There’s plenty of faux fur and lace mixed in too, which should vamp up your outfit for night time.

To style, add some tights, heeled brogues or Mary-Jane courts, a faux fur scarf or collar, a leather clutch and a faux-fur coast. Style your hair in loose waves or victory rolls.
