How Lycra Has Revolutionised Women's Hosiery

by George McGonigal

Before Lycra was invented, hosiery was a far cry from the versions we know today. Lycra revolutionised women's hosiery for a number of reasons, and has been used in its production ever since. Early hosiery used to be confined to uncomfortable nylon versions that didn't stretch or offer anywhere near the same kind of support and comfort that we've come to expect today. And because nylon didn't stretch, tights and stocking had to be made in a huge number of sizes to fit as many women possible. Even then this didn't always work, and women frequently encountered problems with their stockings staying in the right place. But in 1959, Lycra was developed by DuPont. It was discovered that this stretchy material could be utilised in a number of ways, most notably in clothing and, especially, hosiery. It was a revolution to the market. Lycra allowed hosiery to stretch and fit to the shape of your leg. Tights and stockings became much more comfortable, supportive and easier to move around in. Rather than dreading putting them on, women enjoyed wearing them because of the difference it made to their legs.

As well as being more practical and comfortable, Lycra also vastly improved the appearance of hosiery on the legs. Gone were the days of tights and stockings falling down and crumpling in an unsightly fashion around the ankles, but now they stayed up and clung to the legs in all the right places. Indeed, many men prefer the sight of women's legs in a nice piece of hosiery than they do without. Legs look sleeker and more defined, it shows off the curves, hides any imperfections, and can give a sexy sheen to the legs.

Lycra has also given rise to tights being used for medical purposes. Because they can now give so much extra support to the leg, they can be used to help with problems such as varicose veins and blood circulation. Known as "support" types, it exerts extra pressure onto the legs to keep the connective tissues around veins in place, thus reducing the pain and unsightliness of varicose veins.

Tights are now seen as a fashion accessory and are a staple in wardrobes all over the world. They come in so many different colours, styles and patterns that they can be used in a countless number of outfits for a variety of purposes. Without Lycra, this wouldn't have been possible.

So, Lycra has revolutionised women's hosiery for a number of reasons. It's improved the fit and comfort, has made more appealing and clings better to the leg. Without it, hosiery would still be seen as an annoying necessity rather than as essential fashion accessory. Lycra has made hosiery more comfortable, easy and pleasurable to wear for women the world over.
